It is long and impressive, but needs unpacking somewhat if it is to withstand scrutiny. It seems worthwhile therefore considering how this compares with reality and I'd be interested in what you and the others thought. Personally I'd see any internal list of what partnership offers as needing to be clean of any rhetoric that might be added for marketing purposes later. An ideal list of partner benefits to my mind should be tangible, achievable for the majority of partners, and defendable. Generally speaking * many of the services are currently hypothetical - presumably this is an internal brainstorming and not something we would be communicating externally at present? is this more an exploration of the thrust of future strategy? * is this seen as universal, or uniquely South Asian, or perhaps Southern? * do you personally feel these are all distinct products or do you think there is some overlap and repetition? * do you think many of them are based on evidence from current practice? specific questions within: > * Developing ICT skills - is this through the capacity building training OWSA does with partners? > * Fundraising facilitation and information{matchmaking, building > contacts} - interested to hear whether you see this as a current reality. It's not something I've ever been aware of OneWorld doing. if not a current reality, how would it work? > * Belonging to OneWorld community and sub-communities > * Networking (with other NGOs) - How do these two differ? With no networking is it actually a community? If not then they are inseparable. And what kind of networking? Online, offline, always with OW as the facilitator? > * Allowing for Joint Venture Project Proposal marketplace ( amongst > partner NGOS) - is this an idea for a 'marketplace' on the site.... or is it figurative language implying that by coming together as partners permits this is a possibility? why do NGOs based in the same region need to go through OW to speak to each and set up things of mutual interest? (i have actually been asked this question) > * Jobs and Volunteers - agree, these are tangible, they exist, and they have good potential for further development. - > * Directory listing, badge and seal of approval - is the badge seen as a benefit of partnership or as a requirement we ask for which helps market our own site? what evidence do we have that either audiences or partners see it as kite-marking? does this kite-marking have any basis in the reality of our admission processes? > * Partner extranet for all services ** > * Technical services {Dgroups, lists, site reviews, site design, help > desk, email to web} - is dgroups the same as the extranet? > * (forum to) amplify partner's voices to 'authorities', constituencies > etc {web, email lists, worldspace, OWRadio, OWTV, newsletters} - but are specific efforts made to make these forums visible to authorities? for instance, how are we sure that government is seeing what is highlighted on OneWorld TV,or reading the partner news email etc. 'Amplification' of the content on OneWorld sites and in emails would surely suggest that they was being actively marketed which isn't always the case as stats show. Does anyone know if there yet a strategy paperon the plan to 'double our hits'? > * Print and email content to web and OneWorld (e.g MIT's EWMS system- > providing means for doing this,or may be digitisation of print using OCR > etc) - this will be very valuable if and when it is launched, though again hypothetical at present. > * Application Service Provider service model for building simple web > sites {revenue generating potential} - sounds like production work, is that the sameas partnership? > * Events calendar {On site and syndicated; someone could sponsor this} > * Syndication ( The Yahoo model ) or if an NGO working in a specific > field wants stories on that specific field from other partners on a regula r > basis for its own web site, then finding ways and means to do this through > regular newsfeeds etc. - at last, something to do with editorial content! > * Knowledge-on-demand {Multimedia} - don't know what this is > * Shared Channels/Sessions/Discussion Forums {Shared Creativity and > Ownership with other NGOs,e.g. DOC channel} - this is undertaken with non-partners as well as partners indicating that partnership does not increase the chances of a joint venture with oneworld. it will also only ever affect a small minority of partners. > * Highlighting - currently the biggest bonus for many, we need the marketing to maintain its high status. > * Training modules for partners' non-ICT work {utilise the authoring > tools used for building ICT training materials and use them to create > training modules on non-ICT related work, may be on an ASP basis; partners > give some base content and this is put into an e-course format} - sounds like a huge area, would like to hear more > * Sustainability Services *(part of partner extranet?) - what are these? > * Focus Groups - as a partner benefit? aren't these for our benefit? > * Custom Productions - these are not partnership, they are revenue-raising activites of OneWorld International and need to be strictly separated. Again, the fact that OWI provides commercial productions for non-partners indicates that being a partner is neither here nor there. A separate contract and payment governs this business relationship which should not be mingled with partnership. If OWSA is to provide productions as an economic sustainability post-independence from OWI I would also advise separating the relationships. > *Web site creation, jobs and recruitment, online volunteers were mentioned > as possible paid services. We already have these features, but may need to > reposition or repackage these services for our partners > ** Peter suggested that Karthik and I start some basic thinking on this. So are you thinking of keeping general partnership free but charging your partners for use of these add-on services? Interesting to talk about these, thanks again.
